Alakol is a closed lake with no outflow, located in Almaty and East Kazakhstan regions. More than 15 rivers flow into it.
Its water is rich in minerals, iodine and salt, and its health benefits have been medically proven. Travelers on the Silk Road are said to have rested on its shores and drawn strength from its waters.
Between the 12th and 19th centuries, the lake was known by several names: Turge-Nor, Alaktagol and Alateniz.
