The Berel burial ground lies 7–8 km southwest of the village of Berel in Katon-Karagay District. The earliest mounds date back to the 4th–3rd centuries BC, and the later ones to the ancient Turkic period.

Thanks to the permafrost inside the large mounds, clothing, horse harnesses, wooden objects and items made of leather and felt have been well preserved. The site was studied by V. Radlov in 1865, and Z. Samashev has been researching it since 1998.
