Belukha (Muztau in Kazakh) is the highest glacier-capped peak of the Altai Mountains in Russia and Kazakhstan (4,506 m). It rises on the eastern side of the Katun Range, near the border between Kazakhstan and the Altai region.
Near its summit lie the Greater and Lesser Berel and Mensu glaciers, which give rise to the Katun River. The river basins connected with Belukha contain 162 glaciers covering 146 square kilometers.
The people of Altai affectionately call Belukha "the abode of God" and "the Great Elder." Perhaps it got these names because it is covered in eternal snow from top to bottom.
