The Esik Kurgans are a burial ground of Saka kings at the foot of the Trans-Ili Alatau. In 1969, the remains of a warrior in golden clothing — the famous "Golden Man" — were found in one of the mounds here.

Today the "Golden Man" stands atop Kazakhstan's Independence Monument, and an open-air museum operates near the kurgans.
