He studied at the Turkestan madrasah and was fluent in Arabic and Kalmyk. According to the memoirs of academician A. Margulan, in 1762, together with Olzhabay's nephew Edige, Catherine II wrote a letter asking for a pasture. The period of Olzhabay Batyr's life was a difficult time in the history of the Kazakh people, which was called "Aktaban shubyryndy, Alkakol sulama". He helped to save Ablai, who fell into the hands of the Dzungars, supported the policy of centralization of the state and made a significant contribution to it. Olzhabay took part in the liberation of Turkestan and Tashkent from the Dzungars in 1735, in the battles that liberated Bayanaul from Kaldan Seren in 1736, and in 1756 defeated the Chinese army that invaded the Kazakh lands. The highlight of his heroism was the battle with the Kalmyks on the slopes of Bayanaul.
Satisfied with his heroism in battles, the khan of the Middle Zhuz Abilmambet presented him with a sword with a golden handle. Olzhabay Tolybayevich, who studied at a Turkestan madrasah and learned Arabic, was fluent in Kalmyk. His knowledge of the language also helped him to go to the release of Ablai Khan and take part in negotiations.
