Located in the old historical part of the city, in one of the main tourist centers of the capital - at the intersection of the Republic Avenue and Abay Street. Nearby are the palace "Zhastar", "Abay" and "Intercontinental" hotels, a post office, and the city department is also nearby. The monument is well seen from the main points of the surrounding space.

The monument is dedicated to the innocent victims of the Starvation in Kazakhstan in 1932-1933. This is the greatest tragedy of Kazakh people, which claimed the lives of 2 million 400 thousand people.

The sculptural composition of the monument consists of three parts.

The dominant part of the monument - the image of a woman-mother, by will, desire and pleas, she, as it soars above the surface of the earth. With despair and hope, she turns to heaven for help in maintaining and procreating. To enhance the perception of this image, the sculpture is somewhat hypertrophied and executed in an impulsive manner of modeling.

On either side of the main axis of the composition are figures that occupy in their embodiment an intermediate position between the realistic and conventional image adopted in tombstones installed on the burial places of Kazakhs.

By such a decision, the author emphasizes the connection of the departed tribesmen who have gone to another world. And as the basis of everything - the figure of a boy, realistically alive, but left in indecision and confusion. For him - the symbol of the continuation of life and the family - reading is offered, in memory of the victims of the famine of 1932-1933.

The background of the sculptural composition "Wall of Sorrow" is represented by a height of 5 meters and an arc length of 21 meters.

Taking into account the location and significance of the monument, high-quality bronze and granite are used to create the sculpture and architectural part of the monument.

To enhance the expressiveness of the monument, night illumination is used.
