The ancient city of Otrar lies 7 km northwest of Shauildir, the center of Otrar District. In history it is also known as Turarband, Tarband and Farab.

The city was an important center on the trade route linking Iran and Central Asia with Siberia, Mongolia and China. Otrar was the capital of the region where Abu Nasr al-Farabi was born.
