The memorial complex, located in the village of Zhanalyk, Talgar district of Almaty region, is a place for victims of famine, innocent victims of political repressions in the 1930s and 1950s. More than 4,000 people are buried here.

The memorial complex, located in the village of Zhanalyk, Talgar district of Almaty region, is a place for victims of famine, innocent victims of political repressions in the 1930s and 1950s. More than 4,000 people are buried here.

It is a place where famous Kazakh people Saken Seifullin, Ilyas Zhansugurov, Beimbet Mailin and other statesmen of the republic were arrested, investigated and sentenced to death. In 1937-38, the NKVD shot these Kazakh intellectuals in one night and threw them at the foundations of crumbling houses in the village of Zhanalyk, knocking down the walls over the corpses.

From 1937 to 1946, the “Book of Mourning” was published, which included lists of those who were shot on political charges and buried near the village of Zhanalyk, Almaty region. The book states that four thousand one hundred and twenty-five people were shot.
